Welcome to this thread, the purpose of this thread is to share our Hitman memories. This could be from any Hitman game, book, and dare I say it… movies. I ask that we come together as a community and share what made us fall in love with this franchise and to keep the peace in this topic especially. We all have plenty of stories, clips, and screenshots to share. Thank You.

Hitman as a rejection of modern game design

@mrdude42 wrote:

Just read this on reddit by user dlibutti and thought it was a great read: https://www.reddit.com/r/HiTMAN/comments/aw1ark/hitman_as_a_rejection_of_modern_game_design/

I see a lot of “this game is so good” posts on this sub and instead of being annoyed by them I almost always read them to see what people are saying, and why specifically they like Hitman so much. Often, it seems people are really excited about the humor, or the story, or the artistry of the world and characters, and while I like these things about Hitman, I’ve recently realized that what makes the series so good, to me, is that it’s basically the antithesis of most modern videogames.

Videogamedunkey actually just posted a great video about how most modern AAA games are basically the same: explore an open world, level up, craft weapons/armor, get new skills, fight stronger enemies, repeat. It’s fucking boring. In the last few years I’ve noticed that I no longer care to play games designed around leveling up, and I think that’s why I have been playing the hell out of the most recent Hitman titles.

What I mean is: a player starting Hitman has effectively the exact same in-game abilities as the most seasoned player. You don’t level up to gain new abilities. You don’t gain increased HP or more armor. You don’t really get any game-changing weapons or tools apart from, perhaps, silenced weapon variants. And yet there’s a huge difference between a new player and a veteran.

More interesting is that you don’t even really get “good” at Hitman by playing it. You just get smarter. You replay levels and approach the same problem from multiple angles. You learn where items and secret routes are, where characters go, when and how to exploit opportunities. Escalations are brilliant twists on the Hitman formula that actually reinforce the core gameplay mechanics of replaying levels and experimenting, because they often make you REALLY familiar with small portions of each level, so when you go back to that level for a new mission, or to replay an old mission, you remember, “OK there’s that wrench here, and that guard will go that way, and from that room I can hop out the window and…” And now you have a new “tool” in your tool set, not because you bought it from a vendor or progressed up a skill tree, but because you invested the time and attention to learn the game, and to thoroughly explore its world.

In a gaming ecosystem dominated by skill trees, collectibles, level-ups, lookout towers, and all kinds of other gamey bullshit, Hitman gives you all the tools you need up front, and in doing so empowers you as a player, putting you into the shoes of a character who actually feels powerful because he starts the game at max level. He’s not killing rats in a sewer for a sword that will let him kill the gnolls in the field outside. There are no mini-bosses. It’s just you and the targets, and there’s never a question about whether you can beat them, but whether you can do so efficiently and effectively. (And if you want to shoot them in the face in a room full of people, you can do that, too!)

On top of that, what “leveling up” there is in the game isn’t tacked on as just some way to make the gameplay loop more addictive. Like Escalations, mastery levels actually reinforce the core gameplay mechanics of replayability and experimentation: mastery rewards don’t make 47 more powerful, they just open up new options for approaching the game’s many challenges. And by trying these options, just like by playing the Escalations, you’re seeing new parts of a level, and discovering new items and interactions, and in doing so, becoming more powerful as a player, rather than a collection of stats and gear.

And this isn’t to say I don’t also appreciate the more commonly-mentioned aspects of the game, like the small story and character details that I’m still discovering after probably 150+ hours. (Hitman may be the only rival to Dark Souls in terms of how much content was included that the average player will never find.) Or how the levels actually have a real-world logic to them. (Hello, bathrooms! I thought you only existed in Fallout and Silent Hill games!) Or the brilliant way almost everything you need to know is conveyed visually in-game, such that I often play without the minimap and, while I find it more challenging, I don’t find it unfair or even that much harder, because all of the information I need is conveyed via Instinct, enforcer dots, in-game signage, NPC body language, etc. Seriously, if you haven’t tried playing without the minimap I highly recommend you try it, because it is way more cinematic and immersive, and will really make you appreciate how incredibly well-designed this game is.

ANYWAY. This got long. But I wanted to share because, while I’ve seen some great analysis of Hitman’s game design, I haven’t seen anyone recognize it for what I believe it is, and what I think makes it so great: a near-complete rejection of modern game design.

I think the same elements I love about Hitman are also what I loved about games like Celeste, Into the Breach, and Shadow Tactics. Because I don’t want level ups. I don’t want skill trees. I definitely don’t want another fucking foraging/crafting system. I want the information I need to make smart gameplay choices. To develop new strategies. To practice the game’s core mechanics, and actually improve as a player, not just get the best weapon, reach the highest level, beat the game, and never touch it again.

TL;DR: ILY, Hitman.

NPCs as targets (like Patient Zero mission)

I just thought this:
I want more levels like PZ Hokkaido to make all the NPCs on the location a targets.
I do myself and see videos of killing everyone on the levels. So it would be great to clean up a map legally, with no penalties of non-target kills.
It would be another thing-to-do in HITMAN. And even some kind of a challenge related. Well, we had a couple of challenges removed from Sgail, but what if bring them back with a goal to do all that stuff with a targets? I know not everybody will be happy with this, but it could be as an option what-to-do in HITMAN after completing it 100%.
IO can give us a Nabazov virus strain vial for example or something like this to infect NPCs to kill them as targets. Of course it could be done as an option, not as a part of game experience.
Any thoughs on this?

@Silvereyes wrote:

Hello again. Welcome to the second Hitman Target Championship. With the release of Hitman 2, and a different tournament structure, this time with each heat representing each game rather than using an RNG to determine heats. How will the targets fare this time? How popular will the Hitman 2 targets be against their older siblings? Let us find out.

Heat A will end when 8 of the 15 targets remain. Once all seven heats have ended, surviving targets will be split into 2 seperate semi-finals via RNG. Those that survive the semis shall go to the final, basically using the same structure as the Hitman Mission Championship from a while ago.

Rules:

  • Players get 1 points to add to the board, and 2 points to subtract at the beginning of the game
  • The points players may use increase by +1, -2, every 3 days
  • Points may be split up how you wish, for example you may subtract 2 points from a single target, or 1 point from two different targets
  • No decimalised points allow, so basically no half or quarter points permitted
  • Players may play the game once per day
  • Players are not allowed to “save” missed day postings and post multiple times on a single day. If you miss playing on August 1st, you can not play twice on August 2nd.
  • No duplicate accounts are allowed to play
  • No account younger than a week is allowed to play
  • When a target reaches 0 points, it is immediately removed from the game
  • The game will end when 8 targets remain

Before I get into this I just wanna say that this isn’t me “sh*tting” on the series and complaining about what it is now, but it’s me facing a reality that the series that we know and love did change for better or worst some might say. This will be my opinion and with that opinion, I do expect people to disagree with me, but with that, I do ask that with people disagreeing with me to avoid this thread from becoming toxic. With that being said and done I will begin by starting with the original Hitman 2 or Hitman 2: Silent Assassin.

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin was the first game in the series to really establish the Hitman IP. I say this because it was the first Hitman to be released on consoles and reworked how the game would play and was overall an innovator in the series. The map designs of every level were complimented by Jesper Kyd’s fully Orchestrated soundtrack which could be argued as the best in the series and would go on to be a commercial and critical success among the masses. Silent Assassin would have this mechanic which I loved in both Hitman 2: Silent Assassin and it’s Sequel Hitman: Contracts in which stuff was constantly happening and you’d have time things perfectly in order to infiltrate and exfiltrate missions and achieve the elusive Silent Assassin rating. The story did exist throughout the game which was 47’s first personal adventure and ended ultimately in 47’s failure, but him continuing his work with the ICA

In Hitman: Contract’s the game would polish everything that Hitman 2: Silent Assassin did and would adopt a grittier and moodier approach with a majority of the level’s having a bleak and dull mood being complimented by the night and it also raining. The game’s soundtrack again being composed by Jesper Kyd respectively and fitting the overall aesthetic of the game. Personally speaking Contract’s became my favorite in the series with it being a “BEST OF” in the series and with a lot of the levels being remakes. Contracts would also be the game which mastered both Camera angles with proper sizes for weapons, sway/camera bob, and gunplay with them perfecting the original Glacier engine.

With the release of Hitman: Blood Money which is argued amongst the masses as the best in the series when it comes to level design. The series would adopt a new engine for this game specifically and would have what I consider the worst Character Models in the series with them looking like polygons if you looked at them closely they were quite blocky. The series would establish weapon customization and a notoriety system which if the player had high notoriety the player would have complications among the levels. Hitman: Blood Money was intended to be the final game in the series.

Year’s would pass and with a failure such as Kane and Lynch 2 the series Square Enix wanted a new game in the Hitman Series. The game would be Hitman Absolution. Hitman Absolution would be the moody midlife crisis of the series with it adopting a narrative that was cinematic, forced, and linear. The game was to appeal to a new audience and with that led to the series losing its unforgiving gameplay adopting a terrible disguise system that was complicated by a cheat mode which was called Instinct Mode. Overall Absolution would become one of the heavily marketed Hitman’s among that being the controversial and sexualized Saint’s.

With the Hitman reboot both being Hitman (2016) and Hitman 2 the series would go back to its Blood Money level design’s and would focus on replayability more than anything. The series would use an updated Glacier 2 engine and would use vibrant locations throughout the world. With that, the series would continue using Vibrant locations and would lose the gritty tone that the series had for a while now. I would soon notice the lack of bleak and depressing locales in the series with only bright and vibrant weather in and among the levels. The series would go back to its normal gameplay which fortunately appealed to both hardcore and new players alike. Collectively I have over a month worth of time with Hitman (2016) and Hitman 2 spent and do enjoy the title and do think about how nice it was to roam around in depressing environments that fit the tone of the series really well and I do miss it to some degree.

I do hope we get more variety with the overall feel of the levels in the upcoming expansions with them at least acknowledging concept’s of rain and stormy weather, but one can only wish.

I don’t mean a safe house. I mean the one place 47 can go and chill when he is between missions or having some time out. I thought it would be interesting to see what the community would think of the kind of pad he would have. Home is where the heart is, after all. The one place that defines who we are. You could consider:

  • Type of residence (suburban house, beach house, cabin, apartment, condo, penthouse, mansion, bunker, etc)
  • Possessions (furniture, art, wardrobe, ornaments, hobby equipment, vehicles, gadgets, weapons, etc).
  • Location (Europe, Americas, Oceania, Asia, Africa, Middle East).
  • Design (What would it look like? Major interior and exterior architectural/design features).
  • Atmosphere (gloomy, modern, wealthy, humble, vibrant, messy, tidy, etc).

Feel free to include pictures to help visualise ideas (entire properties or rooms, not individual possessions).
